New preview of GeneXus for Agents in GeneXus Next 2026.01

The new preview of GeneXus Next 2026.01 and GeneXus for Agents is now available. This preview marks a significant step in the process leading to the official.

This version allows working on Knowledge Bases v18 using GeneXus for Agents, without depending on the GeneXus Next IDE. It brings agentic capabilities closer to GeneXus 18 users without requiring a prior migration.

For current customers and users, this represents a natural continuity: everything the GeneXus community already knows and uses is preserved, and it is enhanced with agentic capabilities.

The features that will be released in this version can be found on this Wiki page.

"This preview brings us closer to the release of the first version of GeneXus for Agents. At this stage, feedback from the GeneXus Community is essential. We thank those who are active on the forum, sharing how they are exploring the new capabilities and offering suggestions and comments. The GeneXus R&D team will continue adding improvements and fixes before the official release," says Ursula Bartram, GeneXus Quality & Delivery Manager.

Below are the main updates included in this preview:

Working with GeneXus 18 Knowledge Bases from GeneXus for Agents

It is now possible to open and modify GeneXus 18 Knowledge Bases directly from GeneXus for Agents, without needing to use the GeneXus Next IDE. Builds continue to run with the corresponding GeneXus 18 installation.

New GeneXus Next CLI component

A new command line component has been added that connects AI agents, including Claude Code, Codex CLI, and CODA CLI, to the GeneXus MCP Server. This component enables a development experience based on natural language.

Opening KBs from any folder

GeneXus Next now allows creating and opening KBs from any location on the machine, offering a more flexible experience aligned with GeneXus 18.

Improved textual representation of KBs

The textual format of KBs was redesigned to make it clearer and more complete. This change improves work with AI agents, version control, and collaborative development workflows.

About GeneXus for Agents

GeneXus for Agents, launched on March 31, 2026 as part of the GeneXus Next 2026.01 update. The technology exposes GeneXus as an MCP server, allowing AI agents to interact with Knowledge Bases through the platform's validation mechanisms.

With this integration, teams can work with coding agents such as Globant CODA, Claude Code, or OpenAI Codex to read objects, propose changes, generate auxiliary code, and explore existing systems, expanding the ways of interacting with the KB beyond exclusive use of the IDE.

GeneXus's deterministic engine remains unchanged. Code continues to be generated with semantic validations, normalization, and impact analysis at every step. What changes is the way teams interact with the KB in this new context.
