Migrating to X: extended opportunities

GeneXus applications that developed towards the new X version allow for new opportunities in terms of technology, methodology and production. Here are the possibilities and the various scenarios to be considered prior to “Go To X”.

Upon a novel and important version of GeneXus, this could be the right time to undergo significant changes on an existing application, which would have a positive effect on the work teams of companies based on innovation.

According to Claudia Araújo, Project Manager for GeneXus Consulting, the update process towards X is a profitable state-of-the-art technology, oriented at Web 2.0. Nevertheless, when the time comes to define hours of work for this, it is important to know the limits convenient for migration. For this purpose, it is possible to define three scenarios that combine the degree of development that the application will have, with the size and the time available to reach such degree of development (Refer to chart).

This is the dynamic scenario where GeneXus Consulting launches “Go To X”, an updating service for the application and the development team, that takes into account the client’s immediate possibilities and needs. Based on the actual application and the level of development sought by the client, a proposal is defined to include customized services to go to X, where the human and technological aspects implied in the change are weighed.

The update process is a unique opportunity for adding new technological knowledge to the development team, as well as for adopting improved development methods, for managing projects, and for applying new tools in achieving new levels of productivity. This synergy between technology and the team will result in increased production and simplified maintenance, as well as in possibilities for innovation.

Three levels of migration:

Level 1 –Updating the GeneXus version. This level implies changing to GeneXus X, while updating the platform where it is generated, or the database engine used.

Level 2 – A modernization of the web interface. In this level, the green screen or Win applications move to full web architecture. This transition brings along the advantages implied in web architectures.

Level 3 – Evolving towards modern application architecture. This option includes an in-depth review of the application with new methodological practices and technologies such as: SOA – BPM – BI – Patterns with a strong impact on architecture and the possibility of attaining new levels of productivity and maintenance for the application.

Why migrate to GeneXus X?

As per Claudia Araújo, the significance of shifting to GeneXus X is that “it enables a quick technological response to business demands with the applications available, apart from the possibility of adjusting to changes in a flexible manner”. According to GeneXus Consulting’s Trading Manager Alfonso Berriel: “As a consequence, instead of taking this as an isolated process of regular technological migration, we might have to see it as a transformation process aimed at a better position within a reality that imposes increasingly dramatic changes, where management systems are expected to provide the necessary solutions to contextual changes while acting as a differentiating aspect for corporate competitiveness”.

The way to GeneXus X
There is an ample universe of possibilities; so Go To X considers quite different realities in a flexible manner. In this sense, Berriel explained: “There are clients who have technical resources available to process changes on their own, and they only need support, methodology-wise, that is: tools for making the task easier along with a reliable roadmap. But others, depending on the magnitude of the issue or on the time to market, might need customized support that can be provided in various forms of capability supplements. Anyway, our approach is aimed at overall solutions, both in terms of software and in regards to those involved in the process, based on strengthened technical capability for the client’s development team, and the added value essential to this process”.
