Broken links in the portal. How do they affect us?

In the GXportal blog you can find solutions to solve the problem of broken links in your web site.

Broken links in the portal. How do they affect us?

First of all, let's define what a broken link is. We could say that they are links which target pages that do not exist. In general, this happens when the link has been moved to another address, there are typos in the link, or, if the link is external, because the website no longer exists.

What happens when visitors to your website try to access a section that interests them and find a message that says something like: "The page cannot be displayed"? Personally, I don't stay much longer and continue to look for information somewhere else. The problem is that if many people have a similar reaction, the site is losing potential customers. In addition, I get the feeling (at least in my case) that the site has little maintenance and therefore it isn't reliable.

Search engines are another aspect of this issue. If visitors can't reach a group of pages in your site by clicking on links, search engines will not be able to index their content. This reduces your website's visibility on the Internet because when users use Google to search for certain words that haven't been indexed in your website due to this problem, you will not be included in the results.
GXportal controls the problem of broken internal links by showing visitors only valid links. If a page no longer exists, the links to it are hidden.

What if we want to replace one page with another? That's when catalogued links come into play. For the pages in our website that will be referenced from many places (menus, banners, contents) we should use catalogued links. If later we want to replace the page with another or have these links target a different location, we only have to change the reference in the catalog.

As for external links, GXportal has a Link Report tool that can be found in Configuration->Tools->Link Report. From there we can analyze the site looking for invalid links included, for example, in the content body, product details, FAQs, etc.
In addition to the external links, the "Link Report" analyzes other problems related to this subject. I encourage you to read more about this tool by clicking here (read the "Link Report" section).
