Adding social bookmarking icons in our pages

Gxportal Blog provides a few tips for these 2.0 tools.

How to add social bookmarking icons to our pages?

The first question we have to answer is what Social Bookmarking is. This video provides a good explanation focused on Del.icio.us, one of the most popular social bookmarking services.

While Del.icio.us is focused on enabling the storage, classification and sharing of links, there are also other sites dedicated to sharing links to news, blog articles or anything interesting on the Internet. Other users can vote for links so that only the most popular ones are featured on the homepage. These websites are known as "social news" sites and some of the most popular ones are Reddit, Digg and Slashdot.

The second question is: what benefits do I obtain by adding these icons to my pages?

By adding icons to facilitate social bookmarking in our pages, we’re making life easier for visitors who use these services, and this is positive because it increases the chances that our pages reach these websites, which in turn will increase our website’s visibility on the Internet.

So... how do we add those icons? First, we have to create the icon bar. A simple way to do so is to use the service offered by AddThis.com, where we can create our own icon bar including the most popular social bookmarking and social news services. To create the toolbar, go to www.addthis.com and follow the steps described there; it’s really easy! Once you complete these steps, you'll obtain the HTML/Javascript code to include in your icon bar; depending on the chosen configuration it will look similar to the one below:

The steps below have to be performed in GXportal:
First, create a Free HTML (from Design --> Free HTML) with the code you obtained from AddThis.com (it's important that you use the text editor in this step).

If you want the icon bar to be present in all the web pages of your portal, you have to place the Free HTML in the template(s) of your portal using a Free HTML GXportlet. Also, you may want to include it only in the news published in your portal. To do so, place the Free HTML only in the content detail page.

In my case, I placed it in the content detail page of the "Industry and Commerce" page and it looks as shown below:
