GISMarine: A Case of Technological Optimization and Scalability for the Aquaculture Industry

With the solution developed by GXConsultores, the company Marine Harvest Chile succeeded in optimizing its strategic decision-making process.

Marine Harvest Chile is engaged in the farming, processing, and distribution of various salmon varieties. Today, it represents approximately 30% of the global industry, making it one of the largest companies in this sector.

Using GeneXus technology, Marine Harvest Chile, in collaboration with GXConsultores (a GeneXus Gold Solution Partner in Chile), decided to migrate and optimize its Geographic Information System “GISmarine.” This process focused on improving the adaptability and scalability of the company’s key tool for supporting strategic decision-making.

GXConsultores chose to base the upgrade on GeneXus technology to enhance Marine Harvest Chile’s GIS. The process was divided into three main objective groups:

Web: Maintain and improve the web backend visualization.
Data: Migrate the shapefile-based geodatabase to a DBMS and create structures to manage tabular information.
Integration: Integrate various data sources from files, proprietary systems, and third-party systems available in the company’s catalog.

Regarding the application's implementation, Cristian Vera, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of GXConsultores, stated:
“With GeneXus technology, we established a solid foundation to functionally and technologically scale the GISmarine platform. It enables the creation and maintenance of proprietary data, while also connecting multiple existing data sources in the company's catalog, turning the platform into a key ally throughout the strategic decision-making process.”

The platform offers several advantages and services, including: official georeferencing and management of the company’s aquaculture concessions, administration of legal, sanitary, and administrative information, contextualization of other industry stakeholders involved in daily operations, and the dynamic updating of information related to various entities represented in the system.

It is worth noting that GISmarine currently holds more than 200 layers of geographic data, significantly facilitating the company's strategic decision-making process.

Thanks to the application's restructuring and the project team’s dedicated work, the system was successfully updated both functionally and technologically. As a result, Marine Harvest Chile now manages 65,000 tons of high-quality salmon in Chile—an outstanding example of GIS application optimization and scalability.
